RE: How are you and your RV during these times?

Hi
The worse it gets the better I like having the RV. If everything goes to H**l in a handbasket we can live in it, takes some of the uncertainty out of life when you have a spare house that moves!

RE: FillFresh Water Tank at Flying J?

Hi
Yes to the water but no to the tap at the dump station no matter what it says. If you are lucky there will be a water tap at the fuel island and you can fill the water while the fuel pumps. There is often a water supply near the air hose off to one side but it often has an odd, non threaded spigot in it for filling radiators and washer bottles.I got a device that slips over that to connect to the rv's inlet. I am not afraid of a tiny smear of oil or antifreeze but I seriously do not want any fecal coli from the dump station at all. nope! On the other hand just about all of the city water is fine, besides what do you think they washed the lettuce on your Big Boy Burger in?

RE: Are you using that cd changer in your rig?

Hi
USB thumb drives! We cary about 3,000 tunes and many audio books on several of them kept on a key chain. We can either pick and choose direct from the drives or use a laptop to make smaller collections for a particular trip.

RE: Wiper Blades vs Refills..??

Hi
Advanced Auto Parts had both the "refills" and the complete assembly. I bought the assembly because the old ones looked shot. I spent about $25 They work fine and I have put about 9,000 mi on the rig since.I might use the replacement refills after this or I might not. Remember that the blades only work well if the arms hold them firmly and evenly on the glass, not an easy job on these long wipers.

RE: Goodyear G670's whats your experience?

Hi
We got a set of them for our rig about three months ago and have put 8,000 mi+ on them. Drove them in 115f heat and in Death Valley, in pouring rain and wicked wind on twisty narrow roads and up and down serious hills with nary a problem. We like them. They may have improved the ride a tiny bit. Improved the handling somewhat particularly at speed in the wet. Can't say that they performed any miracles either.

RE: Rubber Roof Cleaning

Hi
Last time I cleaned the roof I used a mild solution of water and Ajax dish soap with a soft long handled brush. It worked as well or better than the expensive stuff and did not take long to do. Next time I will try the Murphy's. Did not think of that!
PS I do not wash it unless I am going to caulk it or something like that. I cannot see it anyway.

RE: Should I park my motorhome on grass for the winter?

Hi
When I lived up north we had a Paved driveway and a grass parking space. Whatever we parked on grass rusted out way faster. At least put in 5-10 yards of 3/4" stone to give it a dry place to sit on.

RE: Pad Advice

Hi;
Since the fill is already in I would suggest sticking with crushed rock. As stated before I can rake to fill ruts and some of the stuff is quite pretty. Grey water disapears into it also ;-)

RE: advice on caulking

Hi
Eternabond on the gaps or seams and Dicore self leveling on top. DiCore non leveling on the side. Do not wait because the water can do damage that you do not see and will be really hard to repair. Be really careful removing the old stuff but do get it off.

RE: Tire Pressure

Hi
I am running the tire manufacturers recommended pressure for the maximum that I will weigh with full fuel, water and provisions. As a married man I can tell you that that will always be the same as the Max. axle weight for each corner but I weigh it near the start of the first trip anyway. Don't ask me how the DW knows exactly how much she can load but she does! As provisions are used up she tops off with souvenirs and rocks (see the I love Lucy Movie.) The coach calls for 60# Goodyear calls for 70# and 80# gives more mileage and a bone shaking ride. I have to choose between 70 and 80 depending on the roads. Hope that helps. Get Weighed and keep the report in the glove box. No excuses.
I have the ford 10cyl and the Goodyear G670RV tires with the Koni FSD's and it still rides like a paint shaker on a rough road. Nature of the beast I guess.

RE: safety chain or cable???????

Hi
I use both, whichever hangs the best. I have had the toad detach once and I can tell you that the cables held. As for the base plate to car cables/chains I could fing no place to connect them to our '97 Civic. The hold down rings on the car are removed to install the plate. Blue Ox could not suggest where to attach them when I called. I had a pro check for me and he said that the frame is really just bent sheet metal and that chains or cables would simply pull through it. Welding on an attachment point would weaken the frame also. I check the bolts a lot.

RE: What to do about banking while on the road?

Hi
All of our banking has been online for years so it was easy to use once we got a Mini Laptop with WiFi this year. If you are already an AT&T DSL customer then you can get their WiFi account free. If not get a Starbucks card for free WiFi. Most CG's have WiFi and some rest areas. We have everything on direct deposit and all the bills on auto pay. Once a week we can check the accounts and make adjustments and transfers. We have debit cards but in this age of intrusive information gathering we prefer to simply take a big wad of cash when we pass home base. That is a whole other topic though.

RE: Refrigerator ON or OFF when parked at home

Hi
Usually on. I like to keep the rig stocked and ready to go anyway. It is nice to have a few sodas and cold water sitting out there. I keep freezer packs in the freezer too so they are always ready for the cooler. Guests sometimes sleep in the RV so it also serves as a mini bar. If it needs defrosting or if the LP is low I will shut it off until we need it again though. After reading about the rust though I will start it up when I exercise the A/C and Genet every other Sunday.

RE: What non RV items do you use with your RV?

Hi
Drinking water filter under sink with separate tap on sink, Espresso maker, blender, mini blinds, kitchen hooks, flower vase (velcro on bottom) flag holders, reading lights, towel racks, window fans, table fans, loads of plastic storage (food and otherwise) all the nylon drawstring bags I can get to store things in the basement compartments. Almost anything can be found at yard sales while traveling too!

RE: Hydralic Jack lines

Hi
We had a similar problem with our Coachmen A class. The lines had been routed near the exhaust and in one place a lightweight wrap of some sort of fabric insulated them. HWH helped to figure it out and I must locate some heat proof reflective insulation, wrap any problem areas and replace the ties. Not an uncommon problem.

RE: Dumping tanks at home - okay or not?

Hi
I have a septic tank that is just close enough to the RV's parking spot to stretch the dump hose. I rarely have a lot in the black tank anyway after the drive home. I attach 6" of garden hose for the grey and let it run onto the roots of a tree behind it while parked. Handy if I do cleaning inside or want to wash up after working on the RV. The tree looks great and flowers all the time.

RE: jeep tow plate bolts loose

Hi
We had the base plate for our Civic installed by the Blue Ox Dealer in Key Largo. We checked to see that it was tight. When we got to 'Jersey 2 days later we found that the nuts on the inside of the frame had come loose and that the base plate could no longer be tightened! We had to replace the hardware with the next size up using nyloc nuts inserted through holes made in the frame. This has held. The truck and RV shop that did cited improper installation by the dealer. Scary to say the least! We check them as often as we can but that requires a garage lift or jacking the car and using stands since there is not much room under it. You need to be careful for sure.

RE: fuel inj. cleaner in 8.1?????

Hi
Sea Foam. No 2 ways about it but I use it for a second reason also. I have a "Gasser" with a gas generator. I use a heavy concentration to clear the genset exhaust and clean the carb. It also cleans out the main engine also. Since I need a higher concentration for a shorter time I put 2 cans into an 1/8 of a tank of gas, run the genset for a half an hour at idle then rest it for at least 15 minutes. Then I put in enough gas to dilute to a more normal level and drive as normal. I can hear the the non-believers wailing about doom, gloom and blown engines already but this will clean out pretty much all deposits.

RE: anybody else put screens on front grill

Hi
Our Coachmen came with a "screen" that had large round holes at least 1/8" dia. It stops the big stuff that might do damage but does not cut down on air much. I would not go to any mesh smaller. I suspect that a smaller mesh may cause the cooling system to depend on the fan to move enough air and possibly increase temps under sole situations. Probably within spec but why push it.
